On road, off road, it doesn’t matter; the 2019 Toyota Tacoma can tackle any challenge. From the workhorse SR, to the new bad boy in the family, the TRD Pro, this year’s lineup of Tacoma’s are a force to be reckoned with. Starting at $25,700 MSRP, now is the time to get behind the wheel of the beast that battles any conditions and challenges with ease.
Toyota Tacoma: Exterior and Design
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma line offers a few options when it comes to body style and bed-length. The Access extended cab offers a 6.1-ft. bed, or trade bed length for increased passenger space with the Double Cab crew cab.
Loading up the Tacoma’s bed is a dream. Standard composite bedding removes the need for a bedliner, and special attention was taken to the two-tier loading notches to make doubling-up easier than ever. Six tie-down eyes, four moveable tie-down cleats and two storage compartments offer everything you need to keep your load safe and secure. A 120-volt, 400-watt power outlet can be added to give easy access to electricity for any tools and toys you’re lugging around.
Pick your poison: the 2019 lineup is offered in six different flavors. The entry-level SR is the barebones, affordable workhorse of the family. The SR5 offers increased comfort and performance. The TRD Sport adds in a more powerful V6 engine. The TRD Off-Road modifies the Sport for increased off-road capability, durability, and handling. The Limited swaps out off-road capabilities for many more standard features. The cream of the crop is the TRD Pro.
A newcomer to the Tacoma family, the top-of-the-line TRD Pro conquers anything it its path.
The TRD Pro Desert Air Intake sits high above the windshield, bringing in cool, fresh air free from dust and dirt you will leave in your wake.
The TRD Pro skid plate ensures sticks and stones won’t be breaking these bones. Made from ¼-in. thick aluminum, it armors crucial internals under the front end from hazards of extreme offroading.
The TRD-tuned FOX Internal Bypass Shocks, made with 2.5-in. aluminum housings and hardened, oversize shock shafts give drivers more ground clearance, damping and fade-free performance to overcome any rough patches in the path ahead.
The TRD Pro cat-back exhaust ensures you stick out from the mud and grime. A raspy, aggressive exhaust sound, 204 stainless steel construction and precise CNC mandrel bends, and a chrome-plated, dual-walled tip sporting the TRD logo combine to ensure everyone knows the king is in town.
Completing the package, Rigid Industries LED fog lights offer intense brightness in a rugged package with wide-angle beams illuminating all in your way.
Toyota Tacoma: Interior and Technology
For 2019, Toyota has brought a touch of elegance to a rugged truck. Soft-touch materials cover the interior for comfort and class, with available leather-trimmed seating to further your sense of style.
The 2019 refresh offers a smoother and quieter than previous models. Smart engineered cabin design reduces outside noise, with an advanced cab-to-bed seal, front chin spoiler, and better aerodynamic performance to smooth airflow and reduce wind noise.
The Entune multimedia system offers access to phones apps, traffic, and weather on a 7-in. touchscreen. Wirelessly stream your favorite tunes from your phone to the available JBL amplifier and premium speakers for an auditory experience you can’t match in other trucks. The available integrated navigation guides you through the road of life. All trims now come with an additional two standard USB charging ports to keep your favorite devices topped off.
An available 4.2-in. color multi-information display offers customizable access to a range of important information, right in front of the steering wheel, such as safety sense features, mpg, and an inclinometer.
Toyota Tacoma: Engine and Performance
The standard 2.7-liter 4-cyl. engine is optimized for efficiency, with 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. Upgrade to an available Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V6 direct-injection engine for robust performance, blending power and efficiency for more of everything you need. This option offers 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.
Choose from all-wheel or rear-wheel drive, with a six-speed automatic transmission on all-wheel. A performance-oriented six-speed manual option is available for four-wheel-drive.
Fuel efficiency for this year’s lineup comes in at 18 mpg city to 22 mpg highway. Towing capacity varies on model, from 3,500 to 6,800 lbs. Payload capacity also varies, from 1,120 to 1,440 lbs.
The 2019 lineup truly shines offroad, especially with the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro. Upgraded suspension, tires and clearance takes you places other pickups could only dream of. Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control are major boons to tackling the toughest terrain.
Toyota Tacoma: Safety and Security
Safety is another area the 2019 Toyota Tacoma stands out. Driver aids in particular rise above the competition.
Thanks to Toyota Safety Sense and more, all 2019 Tacoma trucks feature standard safety technologies such as automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. Protections such as these are merely options, or sometimes entirely unavailable, on trucks and vehicles of Toyota’s competitors.
Backing up in trucks can be nerve wracking, but a standard backup camera mounted in the tailgate handle with an available 7-in. high-resolution display ensures you can spot obstacles behind you with ease.
The Tacoma protects against the threat of out-of-control trailers with the available Trailer-Sway Control (TSC) system. Break pressure is automatically controlled and applied to individual wheels, while engine torque is tightly controlled, ensuring better control over whatever you may be towing.
