A new year means new versions of Toyota’s lineup, and the 2019 Avalon’s revamp is one of our most ambitious of the year. The fifth generation of the Avalon packs a sizable punch with great versatility to match, making it more fun to drive than ever before. Not one to make sacrifices, the quiet, comfortable ride and ample space for passengers ensure the Avalon maintains the great family-friendly feel of the past. With aggressive Toyota exterior styling and a luxury-style interior look and feel, this year’s Avalon is a force to be reckoned with.

An All-American vehicle, the 2019 Toyota Avalon is exclusively manufactured at Toyota’s plant in Georgetown, Kentucky. Toyota promises the sedan is “designed, engineered and assembled” in the United States.

The 2019 Toyota Avalon is a perfect recipe for fun and function. It finds the middle ground between sedans with a more sporty feel that lack family-friendly options versus the spacious but cumbersome, oversized SUVs and crossovers that many families are opting for today.

The Avalon starts by borrowing the athletic exterior design and driving experience of more traditional sedans. Add a touch of crossover-like capacity, with a roomy 102.9 cubic feet of passenger volume for five occupants and a curb weight of 3,704 lbs. Bake alongside grandmother’s cookies and you have a savory delight the whole family will love (and cookies, too!)

2019 Toyota Avalon: Trims

The Avalon comes in a variety of flavors. The starting XLE comes in both hybrid and traditional options and features a standard 9-in. touch screen and an expansive list of safety features such as a Blind Spot Monitor and the Toyota Safety Sense P framework.

The XSE also offers a choice of hybrid and traditional gasoline, as well as genuine aluminum interior trim, paddle shifters, aluminum pedal covers, a sports-tuned suspension, piano-black accents and a rear spoiler.

Luxury is the name of the game with the Limited, whether hybrid or traditional. It offers the most luxurious design. Heated and ventilated front seats, genuine wood interior trim, 18-in. SuperChrome alloy wheels and a Entune 3.0 Premium Audio package with 14 JBL speakers

A better driving experience is one of the primary goals of the 2019 Avalon’s fully-redesigned offerings. “The Toyota team has transformed the driving experience for our flagship sedan to set a new standard for the premium segment and satiate drivers’ desire for authenticity, spontaneity and exploration,” says Ed Laukes, vice president of marketing for Toyota.

The Avalon’s new sporty feel and performance are exemplified with the Touring. Featuring an Adaptive Variable Suspension system and Engine Sound Enhancement with Active Noise Control, alongside the XSE’s accents, shifters and spoiler as well as the Limited’s Entune 3.0 sound system, make the Touring an absolute thrill to take the wheel.

2019 Toyota Avalon: Performance

The 2019 Toyota Avalon runs courtesy of two engine options, depending on whether you want the power of a traditional gasoline-based system or the fuel efficiency of a hybrid design.

All non-hybrid Avalons have a 3.5-liter, 24-valve V6 DOHC engine under the hood. This is paired with a 8-speed ECT-i automatic transmission with sequential shift mode. It is capable of 301 hp at 6600 rpm and 267 lb.-ft. of torque at 4700 rpm. Fuel efficiency clocks in at 22 city and 32 highway.

For the hybrid options, a 2.5-liter, 16-valve, 4-cyl. DOHC engine provides the power. It features an electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission with Sequential Shiftmatic mode. It is capable of 176 hp at 5700 rpm and 163 lb.-ft. of torque at 5200 rpm. Better fuel efficiency as a hybrid means 43 mpg city and 44 mpg highway.

2019 Toyota Avalon: Safety

All the power and performance in the world is pointless if the car isn’t safe, which is why the 2019 Toyota Avalon has added even more standard safety features and technologies. The Avalon proudly sports a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the NHTSA.

Automated protection and assistance is a particular hallmark of the 2019 updated design, with the newest edition of Toyota Safety Sense P included to take some of the workload off your hands.

The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection keeps an eye on the road ahead using radar and cameras. If threats are detected, you will be alerted with audio and visual cues, giving you the chance to stop. Brake Assist can divert extra power to helping you stop when you hit the breaks, and the system can automatically apply the breaks to slow you down.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist alerts you if you start to drift out of a visibly-marked lane at speeds of 32 mph or faster. Electronic Power Steering and Steering Assist can then step in and make small automatic adjustments to steering to help keep you safely within your lane.
